Editorial Review for JoPa – by Ivy Manning
The Scene
Once occupied by the western outpost of longtime Portland fave Papparazzi, the former chef has taken the reins and made a place of his own. Vaulted ceilings, colorfully puerile murals and a something-for-everyone menu draws a following of families with parents who like to eat well. If you're not with tykes, try the more serene bar for dining.
The Food
Whimsical items like hamburger shooters--miniature hamburgers on house-made buns--and snow cones keep the kids occupied. Adults can choose from a mix of entree salads--try the shrimp Caesar with vaguely garlicky dressing, cracker-thin pizzas with artful toppings, or homemade pastas with classic sauces like the slightly watery Bolognese, or tuck into the seasonal specials like beef paillard with comforting, if not overly salty, shallot sauce. The Cup o' Lava, a coffee cup full of steaming hot espresso brownie, is worth the trip out.

Jopa's food is ALWAYS great. We have been dining there off and on for years. If they had breakfast, we'd go, too. Happy hour food is great and $2.95...can't go wrong. THEY have HALF PRICE BOTTLES OF WINE on TUESDAYS! Yes, that's right, we were amazed when we ordered a bottle of wine and the server said, hey...you are going to get half off that. We weren't sure what she meant. Perhaps half off an entree? NO, the bottle of wine was half price! Well, I am a loyal customer anyway, but now I want to tell everyone about this. In times like this, we all need to tighten our belts, but still want to enjoy an affordable meal out. And throw in a bottle of wine for half price..take the rest home, you just can't go wrong. I should mention their food is really outstanding (as I said, we've been going for years). We have always received excellent, professional service and on a rare occasion (every restaurant has it happen): if the food was not right, they apologized and fixed it right away! So, the moral of the story: WINE BOTTLES HALF OFF with entrees TUESDAYS. Great food, too!
Pros: Affordable very good food, great service, affordable WINE, especially Tuesdays
Cons: water needs to be filtered, only 1 bathroom and hard to get into on weekends

I don't give out kudo's that arn't well deserved, but JoPa rightly deserves a platter of raves. We've been to this hidden treasure three times now and, with every visit we vow to return again as soon as possible. Why travel and fight parking in downtown P-town when there's this culinary delight right below Hillsdale? The ambiance of JoPa is unique, open and very comfortable. Everything we've had on the menu has been freshly superb to perfection. We've taken our kids there and, dined alone. My wife discovered JoPa when she attended a dinner conference in their upper floor meeting rooms. Their creative chef has crafted a menu that appeals to all tastes, flavors and moods. After dining at Jopa, I feel as if I've been to a different time and city, but it's still in Portland...and you owe yourself a visit.
Pros: Great dining, extensive wine & beer list, cool building and ambiance, plenty of easy parking.
Cons: Zip, nodda, nyet, none.
