Editorial Review for All-Purpose Pizza & Ale – by Anna Roth

The Scene
Families eating in find a casual, airy atmosphere with plenty of roomy tables and a TV showing sport tucked away in the corner; twinkling lanterns and maroon walls create a cozy, comfortable feeling. The open kitchen area affords a clear view of the pie-makers tossing the dough and forming pies.

The Food
Skip the starters and head right to the pizza, made with their own sourdough crust. Select from an assortment of specialty pies or build your own, choosing toppings (which run from basic to inventive, like caramelized onion and apple) and a sauce--red wine, pesto or garlic and olive oil. The Weed Eater, a vegetarian's nirvana, comes laden with mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, red onion and pesto sauce. Ked's Fave has prosciutto, shaved almonds and parmesan; leafy arugula is placed on top at the end. Carnivores should look no further than the Jersey-worthy meatloaf sandwich.

I have been going to this place for a couple of years now and it seems to have finally settled into a groove. The pizza is consistently great. The service is pretty decent considering all the kiddie dodging the servers must do and the patience they must have while parents check out over a pitcher of beer. But, that being said - the food is the real draw. I get the Nooner every time. Garlic olive oil, sausage, gorgonzola, caramelized onion and apples - you have never had it soooo good. Delivery is always friendly and sometimes they run a little behind, but it is a mom & pop operation as far as I can tell. As a previous review mentioned the will sometimes go out of their delivery area depending (I live on S. Beacon Hill where they don't deliver) on how busy their driver is. I don't find that a consistency issue at all. The will come here if they aren't busy - they won't if they are. I find that to be pretty nice. Since I am out of the area, I have to wait extra time but it is a trade off I am willing to make for such tasty pie.

Pros: delicious pizza, local ownership, delivery

Cons: kids/loud

I used to recommend this place to all my friends and co-workers. Now I regret it. The pizza is great and so is the Hot brownie desert. Love the kids area, it gives parents a nice break. The problem is the Passive Aggressive Service. Here is what I mean....I canceled a pizza delivery from them after calling twice to find out the ETA, but after an HOUR and 50 minutes I had to feed my son, so I called back and canceled. Ever since then when I call for a delivery I get "could you hold for a minute" after a long hold I get a yes or no. Because every time I call they may or may not deliver to my area. Okay you do or you don't , be consist. Of course this all has happened after I canceled my order. They always know who is calling because of the phone and ordering system. Maybe I is just a coincidence, but the service in the pizza parlor doesn't exactly come with a smile either, that why I took the time to write a review.

Pros: kids area

Cons: service

A cheerful Central District pizzeria builds specialty pies on hand-tossed sourdough crust--and delivers to the surrounding area.  See the full editorial review.
